Registration has begun for Mel Ott baseball. Early registration ends on Monday, February 15th. Late registration will continue after the 15^th with number of teams and team size evaluated.

Juniors - Playoff Update

Our Junior team continues to excel in the playoffs today as they play St. John/St. Thomas today, if they win they'll move on to play St. Peter for 1st.

As a tribute to Don Finkel the junior team has been wearing arm bands, Don certainly would have been extremely proud to see our Junior team doing so well in only our second year fielding a junior team.

Kayla Shaeffer - Player of the Week!

Our player of the week is Kayla Shaeffer. Kayla plays for Jeff Clark in our Coach Pitch division. During a critical juncture in the game yesterday Kayla caught a pop up at 2nd base with a runner on 1st base. The runner on 1st base not expecting Kayla to make such a spectacular catch was subsequently thrown out by Kayla on a missile of a throw to the 1st basemen.

Congratulations Kayla, excellent job! Everybody, please congratulate Kayla next time you see her.

Conner McLarty - Player of the Week!

Our Immanuel Mel Ott Player of the Week is Conner McLarty. Conner is coached by our very own Scott M. in our K1 division. Yesterday during a nail biter of a game, Conner made what has been described as a utterly amazing catch at pitchers mound of a rocket line drive.

We've received numerous requests that Conner be made our player of the week, everybody please tip your hat to Conner "speedy hands" McLarty!

When attending athletic events at Immanuel there is no parking on north road (north of the primary soccer field). This is considered a fire access road and must be kept clear.

It's with a very heavy heart I post my first entry on the Immanuel Mel Ott Baseball blog. I've simply been avoiding it because it just didn't feel right trying to take over something Don Finkel was just so passionate about. I think I realize now that he would be honored to see us carrying forward.

With that, we are pushing ahead with field improvement day on 4/18/2009 at 9:30am. Bring a smile, after that some shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows if you have them. Mike Rutkowski has been coordinating tractors and field dirt delivery, so he'll be providing direction to everybody.

Thanks for your continued patience and any assistance you can provide in getting the field ready for some baseball!

Hard to believe that baseball season is right around the corner. Yes, it's true! With that being said, registration is now underway for the 2009 season.

Lutheran Night Information

In case you missed the email sent last week, here is some information on when and where to meet for Lutheran Night this Friday. We still have a few tickets available for Lutheran Night on Friday, August 8th. Tickets are $25 (players $5).

Arrive outside the park at Gate C (corner of Adams and Brush) by 5:45pm. This is the same spot as in previous years.

If you have already entered the park prior to 5:45, you will need to get your ticket punched before you exit the park to meet at gate C (in order to re-enter again later).

Please try to find your team (or someone from Immanuel) and gather together before Comerica Park security opens the gate to the tunnel that leads to the field. Once inside the gate, parents may assist coaches in taking players down towards the field, but only players and coaches will be allowed to go on the field. If you escort your child past Gate C, you probably will not be able to see them on the field because you will be in the tunnel during the ceremony.

When the players leave the field, they will exit the park back through Gate C. You will need to escort your player into the park through another gate. Everyone will need a ticket to enter the park once the on field festivities are finished.

Players and coaches should be in uniform to help Comerica Park security identify who should be on the field and who should not.

Beginner Playoff Schedule

Congrats to the Immanuel1 Beginner team for a 3rd place regular season finish, which qualifies them for the playoffs!

Immanuel takes on #2 seeded Macomb#3 on Wednesday night at Immanuel, starting at 6:15pm. The game will be played at Immanuel because of field availability at Macomb. Also on Wednesday night, top seeded Fraser takes on #4 Trinity at Fraser.

The playoff format is double elimination. Regardless of the outcome of Wednesday night's game, Immanuel will play on Friday night at 6:15pm. The playoffs should be wrapped up by Sunday night, possibly Monday if neccessary. Here is what the schedule looks like...

Prisby Game in East Pointe

The field at Woodland Elementary in East Pointe is unplayable.

The game has been relocated to St. Luke (16/Groesbeck) at 6:30pm. The game is on the Junior division field, which is not the field located near the school parking lot (a short walk!)

Tuesday's Weather Update

Looking at the radar, the weather is clear to the west and no more precipitation is headed our way tonight.

The condition of the field this morning was wet, but Mike Rutkowski squeegeed the standing water off the field at lunchtime...thanks, Mike! The field IS playable.

Meyer @ Macomb#3
Game OFF for Tuesday, June 10th at Macomb. Macomb will forfeit and does not want to play on Tuesday. The game was originally scheduled for May 3rd (SPM no show). Their team consists of Kindergarten/1st graders and they have struggled all year. There is no desire on their end to play any more games this season.

Meyer HOME v. STEP
The game is tentatively ON for Monday, June 16th at Immanuel. Time TBD. I talked to their coach on Sunday (6/8). He thought the 16th would work for them, but would officially confirm early this week. They are eager to play because other teams have cancelled games against them also!

Prisby @ STEP
The game is ON for Wednesday, June 11th at 6:30pm. The game is played at Woodland Elementary - not at the church! Woodland is located on Stephens, between Gratiot and Kelly.

Numerous attempts made to verify date with Macomb, but no response back.

Cancelled because of field availability at Immanuel on 6/1.
Proposed dates of 6/6 and 6/8 did not work.
Proposed for Monday, June 16th (time TBD).

Back up and running!!!

In case you missed it (or not!)...the blog was down for the last few days because of maintenance issues. It wasn't 'my doing" and I missed a great opportunity on Tuesday to play weatherman from the comfort of my own home. Instead, I had to go to the wet ball field last night and cancel it the old school way...standing in a parking lot with umbrella in hand mumbling..."we are postponed!" Geez, I even had to answer a few phone calls during dinner and talk to people yesterday!!! Old School!!!

So...in case you were wondering...that's my story and I am sticking to it! Stay tuned for important information...we are back up and running!!!

Kyle Weishaar - Player of the Week!

Congrats to Kyle Weishaar…the Immanuel Met Ott Player of the Week!

Kyle turned in a gritty performance last Saturday against St. Peter East Pointe that will be talked about by his kids and grand kids for years to come! Kyle was 3 for 3 with the bat. He hit a single, a double and a triple, almost hitting for the cycle. Defensively, he played catcher in the last inning and was involved in a collision at home plate that broke his hand, but he still finished the game. Said Coach Mike Rutkowski, "I don't think I could have finished the game with a broken hand, but the chance to play on such a beautiful well manicured field was probably worth it for him!"

Other nominations for week 2 included Robbie Hanson, Gabriel Macfarlane, Marc Dewey, Eric Roberts and Ryan Kavulick. Keep up the hard work fellas!

Update on Rescheduled Games

FYI...Almost all the games that have been postponed by rain or cancelled by other churches prior to Memorial Day weekend have been officially rescheduled. Please check the schedule below for new dates and times shown in RED.

Something to keep in mind...in most cases, I tried to reschedule based on our coaches input. However, there were a few games that I could not, based on field availability and the availability of the other teams. Everyone in the league is trying to reschedule games right now also and squeeze them in before June 14th!

Have a safe Memorial Day weekend and come back ready to play the second half of the season!

Update on Lutheran Night Tickets

We sold only 200 of the 374 tickets that were allocated to Immanuel on Tuesday during Picture Day. I believe everyone has had a chance to buy tickets, so I am no longer limiting the number of tickets that you can buy. If you requested additional tickets on Tuesday, you can go ahead and pay for them through your coach.

You will see a note in the church bulletin over the next few weeks advertising for Lutheran Night. If you have not purchased tickets yet, you can certainly do so at this time. If you want additional tickets to the ones that you already have purchased or requested, you can do that also.

Please email all ticket requests to thefinkel5@hotmail.com. I should be picking up tickets from the league within the next few weeks, so keep an eye on the blog for ticket delivery information.

I would like to personally thank Marian Moldenhauer for organizing the ticket sales on Picture Day. Her time and effort is greatly appreciated by all!

Megan Starkey and Jennifer Sager - Players of the Week!

Congrats to Megan Starkey and Jennifer Sager…the Immanuel Met Ott Players of the Week! The voting was so close this week and the performances of both players were so spectacular, the Commish had difficulty naming just one player!

Megan Starkey turned in a gold glove performance at 3rd base last Saturday morning for the K1 Girl Power Team #1. With focus, determination and speed, she was able to force out the runner at 3rd base on back to back plays. She also showed speed and hustle as she was able to beat out the pitcher who tried to force her out at home. Said Coach Mike Valicevic, “Megan’s play on Saturday reminded me of Brandon Inge…except Megan can actually hit!”

Jennifer Sager batted 3rd on Wednesday night and was 5 for 5 at the plate, building off a solid 2 for 3 performance last week in her first ever coach pitch game! Defensively, Jennifer assisted on a force out at 3rd base and almost threw a runner out at 1st. Said Jennifer, “I thought I got the runner out by a half step, but whatever!”

Megan and Jennifer weren't the only solid performers for Immanuel this week. Other nominations for week 2 included Tyler Prisby and Tyler Kressbach. Keep up the hard work fellas!

Lutheran Night Tickets On Sale Tuesday!

Friday, August 8th vs. Oakland

Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, May 20th during Picture Day. We will have a ticket sales person at the Concession Stand to take orders and collect money. Orders must be placed on Tuesday, May 20th to insure that each player will get a ticket to the game.

Because Immanuel Mel Ott has been given ONLY 374 tickets to Lutheran Night this year, each player will be limited to purchase 3 tickets on Tuesday (one player and two additional). However, you may request additional tickets on Tuesday, but you will not be able to officially purchase them until it has been determined that each player has been given a chance to purchase tickets to the game.

Tickets for players are $5. Additional family tickets are $25. Our seats are located in section 336 and 337.

Field Conditions for WEDNESDAY - GO!!!

As of 4:15pm on Wednesday afternoon...all games are ON!

I've had multiple reports on the condition of the field throughout the day from Joel Neumeyer and Mike Rutkowski. The field report is that there is a small puddle near shortstop that can be raked out, but the rest of the infield is in good condition and 'not spongy'!

The field condition at Macomb is good to GO also!

Mel Ott Trivia Winner - Jenny Ancona!!!

Congrats to Jenny Ancona for correctly answering today's Mel Ott trivia question!

The question was...How many times was Mel Ott selected to play in the All-Star game during his career?

The correct answer...12! Mel was selected to the team 12 times and played in 11 games. In 1945, he was selected to play, but didn't!

Jenny receives a FREE hot dog from our concession stand! She is also enshrined into the Mel Ott Trivia Hall of Fame on our blog, next to Todd Miller. Although she didn't break any land speed records in answering the question like Todd did last week (3 minutes), she did answer correctly in 15 hours and 32 minutes! Thanks for checking our blog, Jenny!!!

NO GAMES ON MONDAY FOR ANYONE!!!

After reviewing the field conditions this morning, all HOME games on MONDAY have been postponed due to standing water on the perimeter of the infield. The new part of the infield becomes very spongy when it rains and is easily tore up, but it should be able to dry out with the sun and warm weather expected on Tuesday. Games will resume at HOME as scheduled on Tuesday night unless otherwise posted here.

The Patterson/Valicevic K1 game will be rescheduled at a date and time to be announced soon.

The Lohning/SPM#1 Junior game is tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, May 31st at HOME, with the first pitch at 6:30pm sharp! (pending Macomb approval).

NEW UPDATE: The Lico Beginner game at Macomb at 6:15 on MONDAY is POSTPONED as of 3:33pm. Stay tuned for a makeup date.

Good people of Immanuel!

The concession stand committee desperately needs your help. We are looking for volunteers to help work the concession stand at a few games. We are not asking you to “plan, organize, facilitate, systematize, arrange, set up, manage, control, or even coordinate”! All that work has been done for you by Pam Marasco, Pam Weishaar and Shannon Ancona!

Here is what we need from YOU: 30 minutes of your time over the course of the season. Think about it…we have 129 kids in Immanuel Mel Ott. If someone worked 30 minutes at the concession stand for every kid that’s playing this year, we would have enough help for…um…well…about…hmmm…uh…let’s see…well…64 hours and 30 minutes!!! That is more than enough help to get us through the year.

Think about this. How cool is it for Immanuel to have OTHER churches financially support OUR program by purchasing ‘stuff’ at OUR concession stand? That’s FREE money people!

Something else to think about. We do absolutely NO fundraising over the course of the year for Mel Ott. We don’t sell magazines. We don’t sell candy. We don’t have car washes. We don’t…well, you get the point! We have a concession stand!

“Hey Don, we had a concession stand last year! Where did all THAT money go?” Great question! We invested almost $2400 into our infield this spring. 37 ton of gray Diamond Dust and 17 ton of red Washington Ball Mix (plus delivery, of course!) About 1/3 of that bill was paid for by concession stand income from last year.

In closing, we are not asking for much. Just 30 minutes of your time. If you are so moved, please volunteer to help by telling your coach, team parent, or anyone at the concession stand…that is if anyone is working!...that you are here to help!

30 minutes pales in comparison to the time that our coaches spend helping our teams! It's also less time than was spent writing this request!

Congrats to Ty Marasco…the Immanuel Met Ott Player of the Week! On Opening Day of the 2008 season, Ty was a major contributor in a 13-5 win over nemesis St. Luke. Offensively, Ty went 3 for 4, including two doubles and one triple. Defensively, Ty was a phenom at catcher, snagging a pop-foul fly ball half way up the third base line! Said coach, Larry Shore: “Ty played so good on Saturday, he reminded me of ME when I was a boy!”

Ty wasn't the only solid performer for Immanuel in week 1. Other nominations in week 1 included Austin DeBouvre, Matthew Lico, Brett Mlescko, Noah Miller, Carter Moldenhauer, Jack Misner and Michael Berger. Keep up the hard work fellas!

Just a reminder, we will name a player of the week every Friday! Anyone can send in a nomination! A player, a coach, a parent or spectator! The weekly winner will receive a free item of their choice from the concession stand.
